The silence speaks volumes

A silhouetted professional sits at a desk by a large window, head in hands, conveying stress or overwhelm. A laptop is open in front of them, with a coffee mug, glasses, and scattered papers on the table. The text “THE SILENCE SPEAKS VOLUMES” appears prominently at the bottom, with the Randel Consulting Associates logo in the top corner.
The silence speaks volumes

Dear Change Leader,

I want to share something I’ve been sitting with.

I’ve been talking with colleagues lately — consultants and coaches with deep experience helping leaders navigate exactly the kind of turbulence that’s defining this moment. And almost to a person, they’re describing the same thing: the leaders who most need support aren’t reaching out. Not because they don’t sense the need. But because something about this particular moment seems to be making that reach extraordinarily hard.

I’ve been wondering why.

Here’s what I think is happening on your side of that silence.

It isn’t that you’re unaware. You probably sense that a conversation with someone outside your organization would help. A thought partner. A steadying presence. Someone who can hold the harder questions with you.

But the gap between sensing that and actually doing it is enormous right now. Because between the budget pressures, the board anxieties, the staff you’re trying to protect from decisions that haven’t been made yet, and an external environment that keeps shifting beneath your feet — the bandwidth required to even reach for support isn’t there.

It’s not avoidance. It’s the particular kind of exhaustion that comes from navigating prolonged uncertainty, where every bit of available energy is already committed to keeping things moving.

So the need stays quietly present. And the silence continues.

I’m naming this not to add to your list, but because I think it matters to say out loud:

What you’re experiencing isn’t a personal failure to manage. It’s a reasonable human response to an unreasonable amount of pressure. And you’re not experiencing it alone.

When there’s a moment — even a small one — I hope you’ll use it to pause. Not to solve anything. Just to notice how you’re actually doing, and what you might need.

You are carrying far more than most people around you realize. I just want you to know that you are seen and appreciated.

Until next time,
