Groups: Coaching and Learning Programs

Coaching and learning programs for groups allow a cohort of leaders to develop together as they explore challenges, gain fresh perspectives, and develop actionable strategies to achieve their goals. Supported by the experience and resources of a skilled group facilitator, leaders draw on the dynamics of their own workplace environment and the insights and observations of their peers.

Leaders broaden their perspectives by working collaboratively to tackle shared challenges. This helps them develop calm and confident approaches to leading their teams and addressing organizational priorities.

Invest in one of our group coaching or group learning programs and launch your journey towards impactful leadership.

GROUP COACHING AND LEARNING PROGRAMS

Group programs harness the power of a group of diverse leaders with varied experience and backgrounds, working with an experienced group facilitator to tackle organizational challenges and opportunities.

A group program typically includes regular group sessions, 1:1 sessions with the group facilitator, self-paced activities and exercises, and accountability buddies that support participants in fostering self-awareness, deepening their problem-solving and communication skills, and developing actionable plans.

Unfolding over a series of weeks or months, this learning process enables participants to learn, reflect, make meaning, and apply lessons. This ‘Action Learning’ cycle equips leaders with the mindset and tools to lead their teams and organizational change with calm and confidence.

Group Coaching vs Group Learning?

Group Coaching programs provide support to a cohort of leaders over a period of several months. Leaders commit to the program for a fixed period (typically six or twelve months), forming a close-knit learning community in which trusting relationships develop. The Group Coach brings the group together on a monthly basis to build relationships, uncover common concerns and challenges, introduce helpful tools and resources, and to develop experiments to apply emerging lessons. The results of these experiments feed into future group coaching sessions as leaders engage in a cycle of learning and experimentation, fostering their capacity to face any opportunity with confidence.

Group Learning programs are structured learning experiences that run over a few weeks. Leaders participate with their peers to develop skills that equip them to address shared challenges and opportunities. Sessions, typically taking place once a week, allow leaders to build peer relationships and develop a toolkit of resources that equips them to apply their learning with their teams and workplaces.

Our programs for groups are designed for leaders from one or more organizations. We encourage leaders to attend in organizational pairs, allowing them to better support each other in introducing new practices and tools into their workplaces.

SPONSORING A GROUP PROGRAM

We work with a variety of sponsors for our Group Coaching and Learning Programs. Recent programs have had three main forms of sponsors:

Organizational Sponsor:

A company sponsors a group program to invest in the development of a cohort of their leaders. Using criteria that we develop with them, the sponsor identifies and selects participants. The company ensures that participants have the necessary time and incentives to be committed learners, and supports its leaders in applying what they are learning.

By sponsoring group programs, the company gains a network of leaders who have learnt similar approaches to leadership and change. These leaders also develop capacity for lifelong learning, experimentation, and reflection, resulting in long-term benefits for the sponsoring company.

Third Party Sponsor:

Associations and philanthropic foundations are frequent sponsors of group programs. They invest in the development of their members or grantees, using the group program to convene diverse groups of leaders for a shared learning experience.

Bringing together leaders from a range of organizations, these group programs build a rich network of relationships and trust, promoting knowledge exchange across a field of organizations. These new relationships often result in collaborative projects and cross-organizational partnerships. Group programs strengthen the sector as a whole and promote career mobility amongst like-minded organizations.

The sponsor recruits participants, using criteria that we develop with them. They contract for both participant and organizational commitment to the group program.

The sponsor develops a network of leaders who have learnt similar approaches to leadership and change. They invest in the capacity of their members or grantees to learn, experiment, reflect, and act, equipping their organizations for long-term innovation and improvement.

Open Enrollment:

We periodically host Open Enrollment programs for leaders who do not have access to a dedicated group program within their own organization.

Our programs provide an opportunity for leaders to connect with their peer leaders from a range of other organizations in a similar manner to the organizational and third party sponsored programs.

These programs are less tailored to specific sectoral contexts and draw participants with varying experience levels. Because of this variety, these open enrollment programs are valuable conduits for knowledge sharing and exchange across organizations. Relationships and trust develop, and leaders gain an appreciation for the issues facing their peers while being supported to address their own challenges.

Case Study 1:

A philanthropic foundation convened senior leaders from over a dozen leading organizations in its sector in which it was investing over $150 million. It saw an opportunity to promote knowledge exchange, peer learning, and partnerships.

We developed and facilitated a 5-year Group Coaching program for over 80 leaders from the organizations. The large group met consistently in both virtual and in-person sessions in which trusting relationships facilitated collaboration and partnerships.

Smaller Peer Groups worked in parallel, bringing together groups of leaders in the same roles for more intensive engagement, problem-solving, and innovation.

Competitive relationships were transformed through collaborative initiatives, shifting the leadership capacity for the sector.

Case Study 2:

A national association was faced with a critical challenge – burnout in new CEOs was creating high turnover and instability amongst its member organizations.

We worked with the association to develop an innovative leadership development program that provided timely support to groups of new CEOs, offering both relevant knowledge and fostering peer networks through a hybrid Group Learning Program.

As part of the program, Group Coaching took place through small group interaction, supported by a seasoned CEO as Group Mentor, and facilitated by our team.

“Participating in the Peer Group Coaching program has been one of the highlights of my professional development and career! Thank you for impacting and inspiring my work!”

Case Study 3:

A global technology company, experiencing rapid growth, was experiencing inconsistent approaches to change management and decision-making in complex situations. This was causing frustration, tension, and impacting on production deadlines and quality.

We worked with senior leaders to develop a Group Learning program for key team leaders that resulted in monthly sessions fostering a common and consistent approach to technology development.

We supported the senior leaders sponsoring each session, ensuring that case studies and application were grounded in the business context. We introduced core concepts and tools, developed participant manuals, and facilitated small group interactions.

The program resulted in visible enhancements in decision-making, improved efficiencies, and growing maturity of team leaders.

Case Study 4:

A newly appointed leader arrived in a department  that was demoralized and adrift after a series of leadership changes and restructuring. It was imperative to the company’s success for this group to become a high-performing department, working effectively with other business units.

Following a process of team development, we developed a Group Learning program that built new skills, habits and outlook amongst staff members. Tailored to the unique needs of the group, we facilitated the program over three years, updating it to address emerging issues.

Staff morale improved as a result of this work, with the department becoming one of the highest performing groups in the company with a 16% jump in engagement scores. The higher morale and performance have continued in subsequent years of our work with this department.
